What is new with portenkirchner.net

It’s been more than a year since I decieded to leave my web site without any CSS after taking part in the CSS Naked Day. The idea was that maybe an unstyled web site would motivate me to work on a redesign. I had several ideas for portenkirchner.net, but mostly I did not have the time to work on it. When I had time, I prefered to do other things.

Every time I wrote a blog entry, what did not happen that often, I promised myself to begin with the redesign. Google Analytics tells me that although I don’t post very often, still visitors come to my site. And it is not very friendly of me to welcome them with a stripped down layout.

So finally I have updated my WordPress and bbPRess installations and decided to use a free WordPress theme again. After some time of search I remembered Alex King‘s Carrington Blog theme. When looking for it I stumbled upon Carrington Text, what is the theme for this web site for the time being. Carrington Text is a simple, text-only two colume theme using some jQuery.

In the near future I want to play around with this site again. I have a list of plugins I want to try out and want to fiddle about with the layout. I gathered several ideas and plans for portenkirchner.net and it’s design. The hard thing will be to bring them together to become the new look for portenkirchner.net.

portenkirchner.net getting naked

It’s CSS Naked Day ’08 today. People disable the styles on their web sites. The idea behind it is to promote Web Standards, the concept of separation of presentation and content.

For portenkirchner.net today is also the start of a redesign. When I began to use WordPress I used the Warpspire Hemingwyay Theme and applied some minor changes to it. I liked it because it was quite different to other themes. But over time I got dissatisfied with it. I do not only want a different style but also want the documents to have a different structure.

The redesign will be work in progress. The changes will be applied live during the coming weeks. First the pages will get a different structure, then I will work on the design.

Now running WordPress 2.3

It has not been long ago when I upgraded this WordPress installation. There is now the update to WordPress 2.3 avaiable. For me the most interesting new things are canonical URLs, update notification of new releases of WordPress or of plugins that are used and native tagging support.

Since some months I have been using Ultimate Tag Warrior but have not very happy with it and in my opinion it was not working properly all the time. So I was looking forward for the native tagging support in WordPress 2.3.

As the last time the upgrade was easy and fast. Moreover there is an option import Ultimate Tag Warrior tags into the new native tagging structure.

Comments now with microformats

For some time I use microformats on my contact page. Some days ago had the idea why not use microformats for comments to add hCard markup to the comment entries.

So first I had to replace <?php comment_author_link(); ?> with <a href="<?php comment_author_url() ?>"><?php comment_author() ?></a> in the WordPress template. Finally I added some microformats code: <span class="author vcard"><a class="fn url" href="<?php comment_author_url() ?>"><?php comment_author() ?></a></span>.

Hello world! Hello WordPress!

Welcome to WordPress. This is your first post. Edit or delete it, then start blogging!

This is the first default blog entry when you install WordPress.

Since some time now I have been planning to use a CMS for my web site. After having a look at Moveable Type, Textpattern and WordPress I chose the last one.

But first I wanted to have a new design, for that I had quite some ideas but not really the time to implement. And looking back now, there were maybe too many ideas.

So finally today I decided to delete all files and install WordPress and use it form now on. Moreover the sites name now is portenkirchner.net and the old title porti’s island in the name became the subtitle.

The theme I use on time is Hemingway by Kyle Neath. I already changed the color, the font and some minor things. And there will come more changes in the future.
